Things to Do

Autumn makes a wonderful season to visit the South Carolina coast. With cooler weather, fewer crowds and the Thanksgiving holiday, it’s a great time to book a getaway. With average high temps of 70 degrees and lows in the high 40s, it’s the perfect mix. Enjoy outdoor activities during the day, and cozy up with a hot apple cider by the fireplace in the evening.

We are Running Down 10 of Our Favorite Activities in November

Play Golf

With a myriad of courses and that beautiful weather, you can’t beat this time of year for playing a round. Book a tee time at the Wild Dunes Resort Harbor or Links course in Isle of Palms or the Ocean Course at Kiawah Resort.

Walk on the Beach

Grab a lightweight jacket, but don’t forget the sunscreen. If you’re staying in Isle of Palms, head to the Isle of Palms public beach or Front Beach. On Kiawah Island, Beachwalker Park offers 11 miles of beautiful beach along the Atlantic Ocean and Bohicket River. Further south, Seabrook Island Beach and Seabrook Beach offer pristine and serene beaches.

Shop for Holiday Gifts

Start at Freshfields Village in Kiawah Island, an outdoor walking mall with more than 30 local and nationally recognized shops. In Isle of Palms, check out Island Surf Co. for jewelry, beach apparel and Isle of Palms logo Tees.

Dine al fresco

Those cooler evening temperatures make it a perfect time for eating on a deck or patio. Acme’s Lowcountry Kitchen offers coastal charm and serves traditional cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Coconut Joe’s Beach Grill has a rooftop bar for a beautiful view of Isle of Palms Beach.

Paddle the Coast

Catch sight of local wildlife (maybe even a dolphin) while exploring waterways by kayak or paddleboard. Coastal Expeditions in Isle of Palms offers daily tours, as well as rentals. Water Dog Paddle Co. at Bohicket Marina on Johns Island also offers tours and rentals. Have an adventure on the water.

Ride a Bike

Explore Kiawah or Seabrook islands on two wheels. Rent from Alligator Bikes, a company that has been in business for more than 30 years.

Ride a Horse

The Seabrook Island Equestrian Center offers a chance to mark something off your bucket list: Riding a horse along the beach. You don’t have to be an experienced rider, as the Equestrian Center accommodates all skill levels with trail rides and lessons.

Celebrate Those Who Served

Veterans Day (Nov. 11) is a No Entrance Fee Free Day at Fort Moultrie. While you will still have to pay for the ferry to Fort Sumter, it saves you $10 on admission. Fort Sumter is free, but be aware that visitor centers at both are closed, though the outside grounds, Liberty Square Visitor Education Center, Fort Moultrie dock and America’s National Park museum stores are open.

Go on a Scavenger Hunt

The traditional annual Turkey Hunt on Kiawah Island takes place Nov. 27. Go to the Nature Center at Night Heron Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to pick up a set of clues. Use the clues to scout for hidden turkeys that reveal a secret code. Unscramble the code to complete your hunt, and claim your prize at the Nature Center. The event is free and open to all ages. No registration is required.

Spend a Day With Santa

Meet the man in red himself at Night Heron Park on Kiawah Island on Nov. 30 from 12 to 12:30 p.m. Santa Claus is stopping by coastal South Carolina for a holiday storytime. Bring your own blankets and beach chairs. No reservations are required.
