Things to Do

There is something so therapeutic about a trip to the coast.

Whether it’s the soothing sound of ocean waves, that Vitamin D from the sun on your face, or the negative ions in the ocean air, studies find that beaches have a calming effect on our brains. Heck, even the color blue produces a sense of calmness.

Let’s be honest: We could all use a beach getaway to restore our mental and physical balance after this year. What better place to unwind and recharge than the Carolina coast?

If walking barefoot in the sand isn’t enough to lull you into a meditative state, you are in luck as there are beach yoga sessions and meditation classes available to help you find your Zen.

Yoga on the Beach is a recurring event at the Sanctuary Beach Access on Kiawah Island, with a Hatha yoga class in a blend of slow-to-moderate pace vinyasa and longer-held restorative poses. Good for beginners to intermediate level, the class focuses on using the breath to create body awareness, calm the mind, and build strength and flexibility. Previous yoga experience is not required. Mats are provided, but participants should bring water, towel and sunscreen. Call 843-768-6001 as reservations are required.

Studio 33 on Kiawah Island offers Yoga Outdoors by the Lake each morning at 9 a.m. and inside their calming studio at 10:30 a.m. There is a drop-in guest rate per class.

Serenity Tree Yoga offers a sunset Yoga on the Beach session at the inlet between Sullivans Island and Isle of Palms. You may even spot a dolphin or two. Just bring a beach towel and water. Check their website as the week’s schedule is posted each Monday. No reservation is required, and participants are asked to pay what they can.

Stretch it out with a Yoga Sculpt Express class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Wild Dunes Resort.

Kiawah Island Resort also offers recurring Meditation and Mindfulness on the Beach each Thursday morning for those 13 and older. Sessions are held at the Sanctuary Beach Access, and cost $18 each.

A Tai Chi/Qigong class is offered for seniors at 10:45 a.m. each Tuesdays at the Isle of Palms Recreation Center. This meditative low-impact activity reduces symptoms of hypertension, stress, anxiety and depression while boosting feelings of peace, self-confidence and joy. There is a $10 drop-in fee.

Of course, getting those toes in the sand and falling asleep to the sound of crashing may be all you need to find your bliss. Book a stay in a luxurious, oceanfront property to escape the stress of daily life.
