Fall inspires its own flavors, so what better time of year to sample some of the craft brews from the coast?
Isle of Palms and Wild Dunes are a short (20-minute) drive from Mount Pleasant, which is developing into something of a craft beer destination with four breweries that each offer a range of unique flavors.
Hobcaw Brewing Company
The newest of those, Hobcaw Brewing Company, just opened in September. Hobcaw has six beers on tap, including West Coast and New England IPAs, a coffee stout, Helles lager, a local pale ale and a “hoppy session” beer. Open Wednesday through Sunday, Hobcaw offers a great patio for relaxing with the family. Food trucks serving eclectic dishes are scheduled, but you are welcome to bring outside food when they’re not.
Hobcaw is in good company.
Westbrook Brewing Company
Westbrook Brewing Company offers unique, funky beer flavors like Key Lime Pi, Orange Creamsicle Shake IPA and Gates of S’mordor. Take a free tour of the brewery with samples available at an additional cost. This family-friendly business also offers food truck fare, along with soft drinks, wine and frozen cocktails. Westbrook is open from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Ghost Monkey Brewing
Ghost Monkey Brewing, open daily, is a nice place to stop for a quick flight. They have a dozen beers on tap, ranging from their Donut Stout to Farmer Brown ale to Ice Ice Baby, a coconut vanilla cream ale. They even offer a cotton candy sour brew. The casual atmosphere is both kid and dog friendly. Like the other breweries, Ghost Monkey has food trucks set up outside, as well as live music.
Two Blokes Brewery
Rounding out the Mount Pleasant scene is Two Blokes Brewery, which offers everything from hoppy IPAs to sessional pub ales to fruity saisons. With 15 beers on tap, including barrel aged and sours, you are sure to find a flavor you love. Two Blokes Brewery also welcomes dogs and kids. Food trucks are onsite Wednesday through Sunday.
Low Tide Brewing
Staying in a Kiawah Island property? Low Tide Brewing on Johns Island is worth the half-hour drive. Low Tide gets great reviews from customers for its variety of flavors, friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. Its Aloha Beaches pineapple wheat recently won Best Beer in the Post and Courier’s Charleston Choice Awards. A variety of food trucks keeps things interesting. Choose a picnic table under the big shade tree, which offers plenty of space for social distancing.
A beach vacation beer doesn’t have to be a Corona Light with a lime. Enjoy a fresh brew with a funky flair on your next Carolina coast getaway.
