Winter is prime time for sports in the Lowcountry, so get into the spirit with some of our top activities. For those who like to keep moving, even when on vacation, you’ve picked the right spot. With the natural beauty of the area, along with a plethora of recreational options, you can stay active at a slow-pace or at a work-out rate.
Go Two-Wheelin’
With moderate temperatures and plenty of flat paths, biking is a fun activity in the communities along the South Carolina shore. Wild Dunes Resort has several designated bike paths, including a scenic, nine-mile roundtrip route from Isle of Palms to Sullivan’s Island.
At Kiawah Island Resort, you’ve got a choice of more than 30 miles of flat bike paths and 10 more miles of hard-packed sand for beach riding. Rent a bike from one of the local outfitters or bring your own.
Take a Dive
We know what you’re thinking? Scuba diving? In the winter? Well, yeah. If you’ve always wanted to see what’s under the surface, now’s your opportunity. Carolina Dive Locker offers both PADI and SSI Open Water classes throughout the winter, mostly on weekends.
They also have Discover Scuba classes for the curious and refresher courses for certified divers who haven’t taken the plunge in a while. Get your diving certification during your winter vacation, then enjoy an underwater adventure.
Hit Some Balls
Wild Dunes Resort, Seabrook Island and Kiawah Island all have state-of-the-art tennis centers on property, offering round robins, instruction and tournament play. Kiawah Island offers the Winter Instructional Tennis Weekends on Jan. 17-19; 24-26 and Jan. 31-Feb. 2 and Feb. 7-9.
These are open to women as well as couples based on demand as long as you come in groups of four (one court and instructor).
Explore the Marsh
Afternoon kayaking tours at Kiawah Island Golf Resort take paddlers to explore the marsh. Guides take groups to see all the salt marsh has to offer. This is for those 16 and over and children 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult. There are also two-hour family kayaking tours for every-one to enjoy.
Go for the Green
Get into the swing of things with 18 holes of golf on one of the country’s premier courses. Kiawah Island, Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms and Seabrook Island are all home to golf that’s great for any skill level.
