No sooner are the holidays over than people’s minds turn to sunny and warmer days. If you're looking for the perfect spring break destination, you'll find plenty of family-friendly attractions, activities, and accommodations on South Carolina's coast. There are so many fun things to do it's hard to narrow the list, but we'll try.
Beach Time
Kiawah Island offers Beachwalker Park with 11 miles of beaches along the Atlantic Ocean and Bohicket River. On Isle of Palms, discover seven miles of beaches with public access and parking. Seabrook Island is home to two beautiful beaches, Pelican and North. Wild Dunes Resort also offers miles of beautiful beaches directly on the Atlantic. Bring some sunscreen and sunglasses, then kick back and enjoy!
Bike the Trails
Kiawah and Seabrook islands are perfect places to explore by bicycle. Don't worry about bringing your own. Alligator Bikes has been renting bicycles and gear on the coast for more than 30 years. They'll get you what you need. Then take off on an adventure. Kiawah Island has 30 miles of bike trails and more than ten on the beach. Seabrook Island also has miles of bike trails, and it's the easiest way to get around the island.
In the Wild
For nature lovers, you've hit the Mother Lode! The marshes, dunes, and maritime forests make these shores excellent for spotting wildlife. Get the kids some binoculars and a bird guide and take advantage of one of the most splendid birdwatching spots in South Carolina. From eagles to egrets to shorebirds, you'll record some incredible sightings. But there are also deer, bobcats, foxes, otters, and gators. Check out Night Heron Park on Kiawah Island, Shem Creek Park, Isle of Palms County Park, or any local beaches and bayous. You can even take a Barrier Island Eco Tour to get up close to marine life.
Awesome Attractions
Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens in Mt. Pleasant is one of America's oldest working farms, continuously operating for more than 300 years. Explore the Gullah culture, see the Black History in America exhibit and take a house and garden tour. Kids will enjoy the 30-minute-long Plantation Tractor Tour and the Butterfly Pavilion. Visit Fort Sumter and Fort Moutrie, which stand at the entrance to Charleston Harbor. Part of the National Parks Service, both offer guided tours, or you can explore the forts and grounds on your own. Note, Fort Moultrie is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Get on the Water
Book a fishing charter, rent a kayak or SUP, or jet out on a personal watercraft. Your coastal vacation is not complete until you make a splash in the local waterways. It's truly a whole different world when you see it from offshore. On most trips visitors catch sight of dolphins, which is an incredible experience - no matter your age.
