Bicycling is a fantastic form of exercise, but it's also the primary way to get around Kiawah Island. The network of paved, boardwalk, and beach trails make it an excellent transportation method. Then there are the off-the-beaten-path places that you can only really explore by bike.
Ride to the store or the seashore. The choice is yours on Kiawah Island. We put together a biking guide to get you started on your venture.
1. Rent, Don't Pack
There is no need to pack the bike when it's so easy to rent one. Alligator Bike Rentals deliver bikes right to your door and provide locks, handlebar pouches, and baskets. You don't even have to be at home. Give them a call, and the bikes will be waiting for you when you arrive.
2. Miles to Go
There are 30 miles of paved bike trails and 10 miles of hard-packed beach. Because the terrain is flat, these are easy trails, so even beginners can get in on the fun. Grab a map from the rental company.
3. A Ride in the Park
One of the most popular routes is around Night Heron Park. The park has 21 acres where cyclers can see a great sample of local wildlife, sometimes even alligators. Enjoy a picnic in nature or lunch at the Night Heron Bar and Grill.
4. Where Dolphins Play
One of the most spectacular rides is along the beach at Captain Sam's Inlet, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the river. It's a gathering spot for feeding dolphins, so if you time it right, you may catch an incredible show.
5. Through the Marshland
Ride down Kiawah Island Parkway and through the Vanderhorst gate to Rhett's Bluff for scenes of the marsh and Bass Pond. The Minto Point trail also offers panoramic Lowcountry views.
6. All Along the Watch Towers
The area offers gorgeous marsh views. Scattered around the island are hidden watch towers, some over 30 feet tall. Bike trails allow you to access the lookouts, particularly on Marsh Hawk Lane near Cougar Point Hole No. 6 and in Marsh Island Park, off Governor's Drive in Vanderhorst.
7. Riding Through
Ride a bike to the clubhouse at the Ocean Course, and you'll see beautiful architecture along the way. Grab lunch at the Ryder Cup Bar or relax on the clubhouse's back porch before rewinding your way through the scenic trail.
8. Going to the Market
After spending time in nature, it's time to socialize. It's just a short pedal to Freshfields Shopping Village for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Or continue past the Village towards Seabrook Island to Bohicket Marina. There's plenty of places to stop along the way.
9. What to Bring
When you set out on your adventure, we recommend bringing a bottle of water, sunscreen, and bug spray. Each bike has a little bag on the front for those items. Oh, and grab a camera, too. After all, this is one of the most scenic destinations on the East Coast.
10. Stay on the Trails
Many of our luxury properties provide direct access to the trail, including 390 Green Winged Teal four-bedroom home. 48 Burroughs Hall, a three-bedroom property in Vanderhorst Plantation, sits close to the main parkway bike route and Rhett's Bluff trail. Honestly, every property puts you close to the paths. Just hop on a bike and explore to your heart's content.
